A local issue I feel should be addressed is where all of the citizens’ taxpayer money is going. The nature of the problem is people have high taxes but see little to no improvement in their community. This problem affects almost everyone whether they are employed, unemployed, wealthy, or working to make ends meet. Everyone pays some type of taxes for either property, sales tax, payroll taxes, income taxes, and more. This relates to the Rochester area because city sales tax is a combined 8% of 4% NYS tax and 4% County tax. Many low-middle income families pay high taxes and have to survive in poor environments or bad housing. People should care about this issue because it is their hard-earned money that is going to the government and being spent in the wrong areas or where the money is not really needed. This problem can be solved by the taxpayer themselves by choosing to opt-in for specific tax deductions. For example, if one would like to advocate for public education they will go through the process to pay more taxes towards that.

By Graftoneishe Bowers Have you ever walked in the East High bathrooms and it smelled like a sewer or there was toilet paper or water all over the floor? Well this is an issue that all East High School students have to deal with on a daily basis. Not only are the bathrooms nasty and stink, there is a lot of derogatory writing on the bathroom stalls, which have been the cause of a lot of drama in the school. Nobody wants to use a filthy bathroom. Nobody should have to. This isn't just happening at East High School. I have been to other schools in Rochester because of basketball and I was enrolled at other schools and some of the bathrooms have been just as bad. We can address this issue by actually listening to the kids who are speaking out and saying something. Also, students need to take responsibility for the way the bathroom looks also; we are just as responsible as the adults. This is an issue everybody should care about, especially students and parents. I will try to interview the custodians and some students about their opinion on why the bathrooms are so dirty. Are there other factors to consider? What can we as students do to make it better? By Joshua Wilson
While mental illnesses affect both men and women, the prevalence of mental diseases in men is often higher than in women. Study shows that the number of suicides by gender men is higher with a 79% suicide rating in New York alone. About 1,290 men kill themselves, about 370 females kill themselves, and only 35% of men actually go out and seek help. Study shows that men’s mental health is more unknown than females' because society thinks men should be brave, strong, and not emotional. Only 35% of men seek help. They feel the need that we cannot talk to anybody without getting looked at as emotionally soft or weak. But for women society wants to help them care about them more than men because they feel as if no one cares about them because they are scared to open up and speak for help because they are vulnerable and get their feelings exposed and used against them. Then they feel like once they blow up and the anger turns into pain they will become the villain and nobody will appreciate them when their alive and well. Study shows that 27 per of men cry once every few months and some men don’t cry at all for fear of being neglected rejected or judged so men just take the pain away by being away from home, drinking alcohol, smoking, etc. the ways you can try to cope with your mental health are you can go to the gym, box, meditate, etc. There was this lady named Norah Vincent who wrote A Self-Made-Man where she decided to be a man for 18 months and wrote a book about the hardships she had to go through. Unfortunately, she ended up taking her own life because was mistreated, so this states that men go through a lot but decide not to talk. Men with mental illnesses are also less likely to have received mental health treatment than women in the past year. However, men are more likely to die by suicide than women, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Some of the signs that men are going through some mental health if he is bound to getting angry easily or drinking or doing drugs more often than usual if they are sad or more distant, trouble sleeping. |
