Journalism Class Visits Channel 13
By Leanne Garcia On Monday, February 12th, the East High Journalism class will be attending the Channel 13 News, to take a private tour of their new remodeled studio. “Students will learn how a news station works and get a firsthand look at a real live news broadcast,” said Journalism teacher Mrs. Conroy. When arriving to the studio, the student will break into two groups, in which half will be in the actual studio and the other half will get to see the control room, until is time to switch. This trip will be a great chance for students to see how a show is put together from a producer’s point of view and see how the news cast is coordinated from the control room. Not only that, but it will also be a great experience for those students who are interested in Journalism, video broadcasting, news producing, and communications. Also, for students who take Journalism and you or your parents have any questions about this upcoming trip, just speak to Mrs. Conroy for further explanation.

Senior Activities, No Senior Trip
By Aalize Allen We will not have a senior trip for our class of 2018, but instead we have other activities planned. The reason for us not having a senior trip is because there were not enough students getting involved and sharing their ideas. When Missy and Ms. Northrup did plan our meetings after school not many students showed up. We rarely had more than 8 students show up, including me. We originally planned to go to New Jersey but ran into issues. First the cost was too expensive and we did not have a hotel booked. Then we didn’t have enough money fundraised and the school year is quickly passing by. We were running out of time, with little funds to work off with and non-motivated seniors. It was too much work so Missy, Ms. Northrup, and Ms. Bates changed direction for our senior trip and thought of another solution so we all could enjoy a little something or two for our last year in high school. Ms. Bates reaffirmed that we are not having a senior trip but did confirm plans to go to Darien Lake on Friday, May 25th. Hopefully if we start planning now we can make the trip longer than just one day and we can stay in the cabins Darien lake offers. We just need to spread the word and ask for our trip to be longer than just one day. More seniors should be able to come to Darien lake because there is more than enough time for us to start saving and it will be way less expensive than the senior trip would have been. By Joel Alicea With the winter weather upon us, it’s important to be more cautious. Driving in the winter is different than driving in the summer. Follow these seven tips recommended by AAA to ensure that you, your passengers, and the people around you are safe.
By Rosa Soto Albert Einstein once said, “The hardest thing in the world to understand is income tax.” Now we all know that tax is a mandatory financial charge by a governmental organization used to fund public services, and risk punishable consequences if not paid. But why are taxes so complicated to file and understand? Well the Tax Policy Center stated that, “Our tax system could be simple if its only purpose was to raise revenue, but there other goals like fairness, efficiency, and enforceability.” Yeah okay taxes as a whole are complicated, but filing them doesn't have to be. Everyone who has had a job and has to file their taxes. Before you hire a tax preparer find out what are some free resources available to you given by the IRS that will make it easier for you to do your taxes. And with that being said there are plenty of programs you can use to make tax time easier and more relaxed. My three recommended programs include Turbotax federal free edition, Taxact free federal edition, and H&R block free federal edition. These are online programs that will guide you through the filing process step by step with a series of questions, and forms you would fill out section by section. The one I used was Turbotax, which was a great program for me, and it took me only 35 minutes. And what's even better is that Turbotax told me to put an IB number written on my W-2 form into the box given, and once I inserted it, and pressed enter all the information on my W-2 form popped up, and it save me from answering more questions. Although this is great ALWAYS be sure you double check to see if all the information is correct. And they even showed me how much I was receiving back after certain questions were answered, then when I was finished it was sent directly to the IRS. My suggestions for filing taxes are that you make sure you have all your information set out so it won’t be a struggle to look for anything at that moment. Most commonly you will need: a W-2 form given to you by your job, driver’s license or Non drivers state ID, and personal information about yourself. If anything else is required, these programs will inform you about what else is needed. Tax time is supposed to be a great time. It's the time you get back all the taxes you have paid, and the money you deserve. Don't make it complicated, make it fun, easy, and exciting. |
