By Hunter White Have you ever stood up for sexual assault, domestic violence, relationship violence, rape violence? Or knew anyone who suffered from these types of situations or have been bystanders about it? Well if you go down the C wing of East High School you will see colorfully designed T-shirts on the wall outside across from Mrs. Flaherty’s classroom. You can stop by her classroom and ask to create a T-Shirt to teach people about these problems that people rarely hear about. These t-shirts were designed to teach students or anyone who views them about victims of sexual assault, relationship violence, domestic violence, rape violence and even gender assault. Health teacher Mrs. Flaherty said, “At SUNY Brockport I was a Domestic Violence and Rape Crisis Counselor. While I was there I heard about the National Clothesline Project that stands up and fights for victims of these types of situations so I became part of the project and it is active every April. This program creates clothes (mainly t-shirts) to help raise more awareness and teaches people about these types of situations. It was formed in 1990, Massachusetts based on the Vietnam War. I think there is not enough awareness for these types of problems. People unknowingly say things that can hurt other people that have been victims and the things that they say can make a victim think about their past and what they have been through. Some of these t-shirts that are on the wall will actually be made into real t-shirts.” To learn more about this project or to become a part of this project you can go to clothelineproject.info and see for yourself what they actively did over the years.
