By Elisha Jenkins What is soul food? Soul food is food that comforts you, that is important to you and your culture, and that brings love to every home. Soul food is just not any usual meal that anyone can make at home; it is a meal that has a special place in your heart and in your home. Last year Chef Jeff started to do this soul food throw down. This is a way for the students to learn and how to cook different meals from different places. This year Chef Jeff has organized this soul food throw down again for teachers and students. The teachers will cook a meal with their sous chefs, who are the culinary II students. Teachers cooked variety of food ranging from breakfast to desserts. On January 16th and January 17th this throw down happened during second and third period. When talking to Chef Jeff, soul food to him means “bringing everyone together, very humble beginnings, love, attention, and family.” Chef Jeff came up with this soul food throw down because he wants the students to know that soul food is different to everyone and it’s not just American soul food. The meaning behind soul food throw down is to widen our views of “Soul Food” a bit and look at other cultures as well. Mrs. Conroy is a returning chef and said her experience last year was “pretty intense but fun.” Mrs. Conroy cooked meatballs last year because they are close to her and her family. Who will be the winner this year? We’ll find out soon.
