Christmas tree, bright lights, and gifts being passed around. This are the common features of a Christmas day that families celebrate during the winter. Well that’s not all to this season! There are many different holidays that are being celebrated during this time around the world. Hanukkah: This is one of the most important holidays for people of the Jewish faith. Every December for eight days, Jews light a candle holder called a menorah in remembrance of what they call the “ancient miracle.” Along with that they celebrate during those eight days by singing, eating potato pancakes and playing traditional games. St. Lucia Day: On December 13, Swedish girls dress up as ‘Lucia brides’ to honor the third-century saint. Their costumes are usually a white long gown with red sashes and a wreath of burning candles on their heads. On this day the girls wake up their families by singing and bringing them breakfast. New Year: We all know our typical New Year’s celebration, spending time with your family and anxiously waiting for the midnight countdown to celebrate the New Year. Well in Ecuador families have an interesting way of celebrating the New Year. Families start by dressing a straw man with old clothes, then each member makes a will for the straw man that describes all of their faults. At midnight they burn the straw man, hoping that their faults disappear with him. Kwanzaa: Kwanzaa is week-long celebration from December 26 to January 1st. Kwanzaa means “First fruits,” so during this week many African American wear special clothes and decorate their houses with fruits and vegetables and light a Kinara.
